Artist Statement
For many years now, my work has addressed two of my longstanding interests: the high culture of painting and the subculture of surfing. Merging these two interests has yielded a range of work—mural-scale digital prints of waves, wall drawings of wave and color forms, reductive abstraction referencing the track of a turning surfboard, word paintings using surfing slang as a source, and, most recently, geometric abstraction referencing the craft and color of surf culture. In all of this work, my intention is to use the materials, mathematics, and mechanics of painting to create an experience that is intimate and distant, familiar and foreign, right here right now, and forever longing.
