Artist Statement
Meaning in my work is generated by the relation between
the material and the image. The images deal with identity,
individuality, collectivity, and entertainment. I deflate big subjects
and inflate little ones. I am interested in the way we value visual
languages associated with popular culture, such as pop and rock
music or popular literature, differently from those associated
with fine art. What interests me is creating paintings in which we
can understand these categories of “high” and “low” as culturally
constructed rather than fixed. There is an evaluation, but one that
evokes a potential for transformation.
