Artist Statement
My current paintings seek to engage the liminal and discontinuous space between sex, gender and identity. As a contemporary female painter, I am interested in the act of looking as separate from what is seen, wherein desire comes into play (a visual investigation of the concept of the gaze). The result is a movement between internal and external visual landscapes. A slippage occurs between the quotidian/physical and the erotic/psychological nature of the fetish objects portrayed. For instance, whose hand/tentacle? In this way, my painting serves as an important tool for manipulating and confounding the gaze, and for thinking through concurrent interests in psychology, feminism and the history of representational painting.
