Artist Statement
I’ve been exploring ideas around storytelling and characters for
several years. The concept behind my current work is a folktalestyle
narrative. The paintings are scenes from a story, and the
ceramic sculptures are objects from it, like relics. I’m attracted
to the idea that narrative is a bit of a no-no in the art world—this
leaves a lot of room for working in uncharted territory.
The story I’m working with contains elements of a creation
myth, so I try to give the work a sacred, mystical feel. I install
the paintings in a way that references altars or devotionals, with
special objects placed as offerings in front of the scenes described
in the paintings. Imagery inspired by alchemy and fortune-telling
is woven throughout the work.
