Artist Statement

Dear Painting,

I appreciate all you have taught me over the years. We’ve grown together and apart, yet have somehow maintained a close relationship. Do you remember when we first met? I would describe it as love at first sight, but you’ve always seen it as a chance encounter. It was in Barcelona at the Museo de Picasso in April 2005. I was young and you were timeless. I saw you just hanging out being observed. There were times I thought of ending things with you, but I never did. We have the most dramatic, physical, and emotionally draining fights over the smallest things, which other people wouldn’t have a care in the world about. I’ve changed because of you and lost friends over you. One day you’ll be the death of me, but for now you’re my life.

Sincerely,
Alteronce Gumby
