Artist Statement
The coexistence of the old and the new is a central theme in my work. I use this dichotomy to foster the development of a new entity, one that quotes the past and etches out its own identity in the present. Through expansion and contraction my paintings, sculptures, and murals are a hybrid of art history, including the painterly experimentations of modern abstraction as well as the illustrations of the 19th century American naturalist John James Audubon. In order to further a pictorial investigation of these tensions between opposing forces, my new body of work explores their manipulation through symmetry, pattern and the Hermeticism of alchemy. Inherent in my work is the translucent dimension of ecstasy; the idea that revelation can be had through the polarities of perfect geometrical proportions, radiant color and a visceral connection to the material world.
