Artist Statement

Woven Landscapes synthesizes and reconfigures elements from informational images of my natural environment—from vast landscapes to miniature phenomena. Each work is methodically hand-drawn, line by line. The resulting textures evoke a variety of cultural references: from antique engravings though early computer graphics and staticky television monitors to contemporary printing technologies. The meticulousness of my method suggests the pursuit of specificity and an almost scientific exactitude; interestingly, however, the analog pixelization leads to the breakdown and confusion of the original image. While representing a loss of data, the fragmentation of the subject expands its content by allowing multiple interpretations and inviting intuitive, poetic associations that might lead to a more holistic form of knowledge.
