Artist Statement
Collage is a process - but it can also be a strategy that allows the incidental to become part of larger dialog. The different visual languages of drawing, painting and printed material create an odd sort of energy as they form a narrative. The elements in these individual collages present contradictions, implausibilities or obvious oppositions but our mind wants to resolve these apparent differences. By combining drawn and painted fields with printed and cut out elements, the finished collage becomes an arena in which we can consider process and context, and allow for multiple interpretations. While these elements are unified by spatial proximity, their differences aren't entirely put to rest. Instead, they allow us to question the truth and falsehood of narrative.
The subjects can be serious, but it's best when there is an element of humor included.
