Artist Statement

Cecilia Beaven’s art practice, which encompasses painting, murals, graphic narrative, sculpture, and moving images, develops a ludic personal mythology with unique visual narratives, while addressing questions of institutionalization and culture-making. Beaven affirms her creative agency by modifying existing tales and mythology, seamlessly adding fiction and personal anecdotes.

The artist’s mythological, ethnographic, and introspective explorations, in which intriguing mythical creatures and primordial landscapes stage monstrous, fragile, and introspective settings, bring a new perspective on Mexican identity that goes beyond folklore and mainstream ideas of Mexico. Beaven’s artwork, a cartoonish organism that conveys restlessness, embraces the uneasy feeling of what it means to exist within our contemporary mythologies.
