Artist Statement
Working from three-dimensional arrangements made of abject materials, I paint anthropomorphic characters that are loosely legible, residing somewhere between abstraction and figuration. In these paintings, I employ a traditional still-life approach to continually break down and build up the human form, dissecting and subverting the conventions of portraiture. Inanimate materials coalesce into forms that are discernibly physical and bodily. At the same time, I dismantle coherence and emphasize the abstract. The mode of representation is akin to analytical cubism and shares the modernist drive to replace the figure with abstract form.
