Artist Statement

My current work focuses on portraits of people one might see on any street, regardless of geographic location. They show people who traditionally would not have been considered appropriate subjects for portraiture. People who wear themselves on the outside through body modification, adornment, or action. People one might shy away from on the street.

I use the profile pose to present my sitter in a nonthreatening way. These portraits could be likened to the Audubon prints of old. They are a way for people to study the world around them within their own comfort zones. I hope viewers’ experiences and perceptions will be changed in the real world. I hope they will walk away with a new appreciation for the beauty that surrounds them that they might have previously dismissed.
