Artist Statement
These paintings are an attempt to move away from the photographic sources that I normally use. For this series I wanted to see what would happen if I made some new rules for myself to follow. I decided to limit the series to small figure paintings done in one evening without planning the subject or using any visual sources other than my memory and imagination.
Some of the paintings that resulted are impressions of Old-Master pictures I have seen in museums, and others are like fragmented moments from novels or movies or dreams. I am interested in the process of choosing attributes for the figures and how this shifts the mood on each piece. And how the group as a whole changes with the addition of each new character.
