Artist Statement
Donnie Molls is a Los Angeles based artist who has been exploring the southwestern desert landscape over the last several years. His paintings are based on his own photo documentation of decayed and sometimes abandoned buildings in remote desert locations. In his works he isolates the composition by painting out all the contextualizing elements with hues and colors that create a dreamlike image that exists in an amorphous space. In his newest paintings the ìemptyî space around the structures have become as important to his compositions as the structures themselves. The surrounding color field is highlighted by subtle gradations that radiate from the buildings creating an almost halo-like effect. Mollsí paintings, can be characterized as a desert mirage with melancholic quality that is balanced by the beauty and range of his very subtle color palette.
