Artist Statement

I grew up in Poland in 1980's during communist area. At that time to see crowds everywhere was common: organized military marches, organized groups of protesting students and chaotic dispersion of them, striking, people queuing for food, shoes and toilet paper, or lining up to catch the bus. These experiences have influenced my recent work.

I am particularly interested in crowds of people seen from a distance, so that one then perceives a general overview, a pattern created by people. When the focus tightens, the details of the crowd gain resolution creating a more intimate personal relationship. This shift from the anonymous - and sometimes intimidating - to the intimate, the relationship between micro and macro, between what's in the minds of these individuals and the big picture, has been the subject of my recent work.
