Artist Statement
I begin with a photographic image, but without the intention of
transcribing direct information. Building on both my interpretation
of the image and previous paintings, I incorporate aspects of
the source that focus on my interest in children as an organized
population, complete with hierarchies, politics, and cultural
foundations. Within paintings, characters recur in similar places
and the story expands to form larger narratives. Children take
on roles in a plot both distinct from and reminiscent of the adult
world.
