Artist Statement
I am interested in materials, the body (identity), and the
relationship between them. These paintings are an attempt to
represent some essential aspect of who we are and what we
do. Clothing represents such an essence—we are not defined by
what we wear, but what we wear becomes part of us. It can be
sensual, sexual, decorative, cultural, practical, or poetic. Some
of my paintings describe an aspect of a body or a self. The body
intimately interacts with the garments in a way that represents an
emotion. Some show how we are identified. Clothing emphasizes
the existence of the body, whether present or absent, and what I
try to capture is the immediate connection between the two.
