Artist Statement

Through a series of methodical excavations, I carve out collapsed marks that are often pulled in and out of visibility over the course of a painting’s development. Treating my body as a shapeshifter, I move rhythmically to change the pace, pressure, and intention through various ways of touching the surface. My practice has become increasingly physical, as our presence on earth as humans has shifted from inhabiting to truly threatening it, as our basic rights come into question, and as the escalating dependence on technology accelerates. I have directed my focus toward the breakdown of the gesture within the painting in order to reframe the complicated relationship between the maker, viewer, and image.
