Artist Statement

My work is based on childhood memories of Seoul, South Korea. Until I was seven years old, I would spend weekdays in the city and weekends at my grandparents’ house in the suburbs. At the time, the suburbs were a quiet and serene escape from the busy urban environment. I felt as if time had frozen there. With the absence of adults during the daytime, it seemed that I and my friends were the only people in the world, holding all the power. Recollecting these memories, I paint my hometown from the point of view of a seven-year-old girl. Through my work, I would like to engage viewers with the world I create with my nostalgic memories.
