Artist Statement

My iconographic landscapes are drawn from an emotional relationship to the formal qualities of commercial cities and developing sprawl. My work has developed out of an intense engagement with the history of abstraction. I have tried to develop a language that conveys my memory of a familiar place or icon, such as parking garages, warehouses, car lots, or directional signs. These structures feel more expected in our urban environment than trees, shrubs, and grass. They are the new organic, the natural expectation of our new environment. As I move through this environment, I inadvertently determine landmarks based on my state of mind. The memory of that mind state resurfaces almost every day I pass these emotive structures and sprawl. A personal connection is created to an environment that is always temporarily under construction and eager to please.
