Artist Statement
My art is inextricably linked with my personal life. The French artist Sophie Calle once said, "I live happy events and I exploit unhappy ones." Art is an opportunity for me to share selected pieces of my world. Moments with which I have an emotional connection tend to stand out most, and those become the basis for my work.
In this series of paintings, I used memory and photographs of my childhood home in Leawood, Kansas to create dream-like scenes depicting places of refuge. It was in these places that I felt safe from imagined intruders and spirits as a child, and where as an adult, I could find a different kind of security.
