Artist Statement

My practice has recently shifted from relatively traditional figurative painting to painting without a canvas. This shift is the result of questioning both the conceptual and social history of painting. I chose to work with site-specific found objects, or cheap recycled materials. The installation and sketches arose from a process that reflects the way a virus multiplies. Sticking to a rigid temporal structure, I applied one mark to the installation every week for one year. As the space was altered through an additive-subtractive layering process, photographs were taken to document the progression of the piece. I use everything but paint, as if the new materials were brush strokes being intuitively constructed on top of one another. This process is clearly steeped in an affinity for materiality and is enhanced by objects found on the streets and material solicited from peers.
