Artist Statement
In weaving, I am able to connect with the medium’s layered
cultural heritage while indulging in the geometric abstract
language that I love. I invite the viewer’s association of weaving
with domestic objects, tradition, and craft, and aim to subvert
this connection by exploiting and magnifying weaving’s formal,
gridded world. The pieces reveal the similarities between craft
and minimalist abstraction, domestic and high art, the traditional
and the contemporary.
After my pieces have been woven and are removed from the loom,
a second act occurs. I aggressively bind and stretch them to form
sculptural paintings that are slowly built on, and expand beyond,
their frames. Process, as well as literal and metaphorical tension,
is present within the final works.
