Artist Statement

Leland Foster works primarily in realism, and is interested in the concepts of solitude, liminality, nostalgia, and the sublime.

In his work, Foster paints scenes that reinterpret his personal experiences and the people and places he’s encountered to create art that leaves a unique emotional imprint on each viewer. He strives to blur the boundary between the observer and the observed. “The most intriguing aspect of painting is the potential to position the viewer in front of a window, allowing them to glance into a world that evokes joy or sorrow or an inexplicable nostalgia for a place they’ve never been before. These emotions probe the subtleties of our shared human experiences, and are my motivation for making art.”
