Pacific CoastArtist Statement
I've been looking at major and minor historical monuments from various wars. I'm interested in the disappearance of these archaic statues, the removal of them, their peculiar visual forms, and the stories they tell. These statues and stories are starting points for my painted scenarios. To make a painting reminiscent of a statue that is a monument is to explore two archaic forms simultaneously. For me, this evokes questions about history and its relevance and the perversity that attempts to memorialize a war via these monumental sculptures. Furthermore, it elicits what it means to look for formal solutions in painting for charged subject matters. Ultimately, by studying these forms and images, I find a way to personalize history through painting.
