Artist Statement

My work is about the disconnection women can experience from their bodies by complying with standards of beauty that are imposed upon them in Western civilization. These standards, determined by the dominant culture, problematize bodies that aren’t deemed satisfactory or acceptable. This leads to remedies via modifications to the body that come in the form of consumer products, which require time and money to execute.

In my work I reference the historical nude, female sexuality, and body objecti-fication. Color is used as a strategy to convey gender and the privilege beholden to a Caucasian appearance. I use pattern as a way of addressing the labor that’s required for presenting one’s appearance, as well as the removal of individuality in western beauty standards.
