Artist Statement
My work sets out to evoke the collective unconscious archetypes embedded within the American landscape. I often work with maps as a surrogate for paint, while still adhering to the principals of representational painting. Through the process of cutting up and reassembling fragments of maps, I create geographical timelines within the matrix of an image. Like a photograph, a map imparts a visual portal into the past, preserving the manifestation of an existence. Creating an image by piecing together maps from different time periods is an attempt to realize a more complete representation of that existence.
