Artist Statement

I paint a far, far away land where violence magically transforms femmes into monstrous size; their pain must be seen, felt, and reckoned with. I want to bring the viewer to the lowest lows and highest highs, to mirror what it feels like to live with post-traumatic stress disorder, something I struggle with daily since surviving extreme domestic violence.

As a girl, my favorite stories were about unicorns, rainbows, fairies, and angels. Every fairytale ended in marriage. But as an adult, marriage was the most dangerous thing I ever did to myself. Picasso said women are either doormats or goddesses; my work charts the path from doormat to goddess.

Once fully grown, the giants in my work search for a safe place to hold their new bodies. They find each other and travel in packs, trying to outpace an army of angry soldiers. As sightings of these giants in battle grow, so does the myth around them. My paintings are offerings to these new deities.
