Artist Statement
My practice involves the construction of surfaces and their
disruption through varying methods of deterioration, abrasion,
and formal displacement. Utilizing concrete, tile, and canvas,
I generate a series of oppositions that achieve a sense of both
creation and destruction. The work references the natural and
the human, invoking aspects of sedimentation, erosion, and
industrial decay. Through creation and destruction, my work
is marked by constant flux, a divergence from the appearance
of the handmade toward an evanescent sense of material
and image. What is left is the memory of a sensation or the
crystallization of a material experience. The idiosyncrasy of the
work suspends any immediate tangibility and instead invites
multiple meanings to be drawn from the textures, color, light,
and materials that are pushed together with my own distinct
tempo and vitality.
