Artist Statement
My recent paintings seek to examine the conditions by which
colloquial American phrases are extracted from disparate
dialects and are subsequently metamorphosed into salutatory
and entrepreneurial rhetoric. The layered images examine
slippages in translation and intention where particular turns of
phrase merge with the quotidian.
Text populates store windows and building tops, take-out
containers, and digital landscapes. The paintings illuminate the
mechanics of commercial “place” as a “practiced space.” What
is precisely at “practice” within this quintessentially American
gesture is the conflation of commercial speculation with selective
historical narrative.
