Artist Statement
These paintings investigate the role of identity in the lives of women. I seek to understand women's perceptions of themselves in relation to others, and their personal ways of interacting with and responding to their surroundings.
Based on fictional characters I have created, each painting is a singular glimpse into a life. Spatial relationships, light, and paint application become an indication of tension or emotion. The psychological state of a particular moment is emphasized and described through the interaction of color.
As a realist painter who uses paint to describe an invented world, I have become interested in the use of fiction and artifice as a means of defining truth and understanding reality. Paintings work to define and contain experiences while allowing multiple possibilities and contradictions to coexist.
