SouthArtist Statement
I often hear from observers of my work that they resemble
“weavings” or “tapestries,” and, in fact, the many lines do act like
“threads” that have intertwined themselves on the paper just as
the threads of cloth do in a textile product.
I begin an image by covering the paper with one layer of lines,
and proceed to a second layer, and so on. Each successive layer
requires a calculation in terms of line weight, color, or the type of
line or marking system that I want to use. As the layers begin to
build on one another and colors begin to develop, these choices
become more challenging and the stakes of “success” or “failure”
of the images becomes greater.
My process is slow and deliberate, and I find it to be very
meditative.
