Artist Statement
I start these paintings with photos and drawings that are then transformed into laser-cut paper. The original images suggest webs, nests, and random structures found in nature. Rather than visualizing a painting as a cohesive image within a confined space, I see it as part of a constellation, group of islands, communities, or clusters. Each element contributes to the whole but retains its individuality. I use materials beyond paint, including the laser-cut paper, thread, and mesh fabrics. A few of the artists and designers I find inspirational are Bertjan Pot, Jackson Pollock, Gego, Ruth Asawa, and Constantin Brancusi.
