Artist Statement

I grew up in Veracruz, Mexico, reading American comic books, and today those memories play an important role in my creative process. I admire the formal elements of comic books and approach them from this perspective, analyzing the page layout, color combinations, and narrative structure. I remove these elements from their original source, using computer software to alter, simplify, and reduce the imagery.

After decomposing the narrative structure, I create my own stories by recontextualizing the imagery as a conglomeration of seemingly unrelated graphic images. The combined influences of abstract expressionism and pop art create the environment in which these stories emerge and become alive.

After the digital process is finished and I am satisfied with the composition, I make an oil painting. Forms and shapes coincide and drift on planes of varying depth, resulting in comics-based abstractions that have a contemporary pop look.
