Artist Statement
I want to synthesize imagination with formal structures. Combinations of patterns, color, and materials create a series of associations that can be both cultural and personal.
Elements are brought together by playing a word association game: eggs, feathers, branches, birds, etc. I combine these different materials intuitively to find a pictorial structure.
As a result, the works float between illusionary and actual space. For me, pictorial space implies a world other than the ordinary material world; it allows for fantasy and the faraway. I use the tactility of everyday objects to reference the real so that the work is playful and ironic, fantastical and ominous, familiar and unfamiliar simultaneously.
