Artist Statement
I approach painting with a sense of possibility, not knowing
what the end result will be. Often, reference to a specific place
or experience creates the initial structure for exploration. A
painting can shift abruptly as it develops, challenging one’s
sense of time and resolve. The resulting image is both physical
and fleeting, as unexpected and precarious relationships emerge
between translucent layers. I keep the painting open-ended by
allowing for intuitive and contradictory responses, creating an
active image that fluctuates between deliberate and incidental,
solid and liquid, soft and sharp. This way of working allows me
to extract and distill my observations in the tangible world, while
questioning and presenting the possibilities of visual experience
and abstraction.
