Artist Statement
The visual language of my paintings comes from a place of
internal investigation and is fueled by my desire to better
understand the world around me. My work is inspired by a
fascination with internal and external conflicts—how we can
become alienated due to the anxieties created by the society’s
many pressures. In these works, I reinterpret the many
experiences and visual stimuli I encounter on a daily basis
through the nostalgic lens of pop-culture imagery, art history,
and early surf and skate art. My intuitive reactions to the
environments in which I exist lead to chaotic compositions
of overlapping hard-edged shapes, illusionistic shadows,
patterns, and actual texture. By means of recurring colors and
painting techniques, I allow myself to explore more deeply the
repetitive nature of the overwhelming conflicts that arise in
everyday life.
