Artist Statement
There are so many dead ends in painting that it seemed necessary
for me to stop in order to begin again. This body of work began at
a crawl, with my simply dividing the canvas into two halves and
painting paths to fill and define the surface. Painted by hand and
without any masking, each stroke is understood by its relation
to the next; where the stroke begins and ends defines the internal
structure of the painting. I have continued to subdivide the
surface into facets to the point where, in recent paintings, a kind
of architecture has emerged. A unified space has been formed
through the tenuous relation of its parts, but things do not feel
settled. With each step, the work becomes more inclusive, and
dodges consistency.
