Artist Statement

I incorporate the sport of ping pong into my paintings to explore the struggle for language fluency and conversation in the perpetual experience of code-switching. In my work, the figures and limbs echo and repeat as I reference the plurality of selves and create scenes that imply constant movement with a lack of center. By using the sport as a visual metaphor for code-switching and dialogue, I am interested in expressing the phenomenology of embodying plural identities through the displacement of this sport.

More recently, I am working on paintings that are increasingly fraught or precarious, highlighting the possible emotional undertones that the player can have (e.g. the stakes of the game). I am inspired by the panic that comes with language inadequacy or hypervigilance toward active misunderstandings within a conversation.
