Artist Statement
Zane Lewis explores the power of an icon and the religious sublime. He investigates the miracles of stigmata by creating large-scale portraits that literally weep or bleed paint. He christens his subjects divine with flowing paint-which to Lewis, represents the essence of God. It is from these vast puddles of paint pooled onto the floor, that Lewis carves into to create his paintings. Lewis formulates a new perspective of Christ and his disciples-reinvented and with present day iconic figures. These figures, often Pop-Culture icons, take on new meaning by being portrayed metaphorically as religious nobility.
