Assistant Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art
Blanton Museum of Art

Evan Garza is Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. At the Blanton, Garza was the managing curator of “Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties,” organized by the Brooklyn Museum. His recent exhibitions include “PAINT THINGS: beyond the stretcher,” the first major museum exhibition to examine contemporary sculptural and performative forms of painting, co-curated with Dina Deitsch at the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (2013); "Something Along Those Lines" at SMFA, a curatorial response to the first Sol LeWitt wall drawing in Boston (2012); and “william cordova: this one’s 4U (pa’ nosotros)”, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Boston. He was appointed to the Boston Art Commission by Mayor Marty Walsh in 2014, and served as Exhibitions and Public Programs Coordinator for the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) from 2011-2014.
A Texas native, Garza was Editor-at-Large for New American Paintings from 2009-2012, where he helped expand the magazine’s first editorial and web content. Garza is the co-founder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), a nonprofit organization based in New York City and the first residency program in the United States exclusively for LGBTQ artists.
