Susan Cross

Susan Cross is Curator of Visual Arts at MASS MoCA, where she has organized major exhibitions and new commissions by Alex Da Corte, Liz Deschenes, Spencer Finch, Katharina Grosse, Steffani Jemison, Guillaume Leblon, Richard Nonas, and Simon Starling, among others. She recently curated  In the Abstract, a look at the formal and political influences of abstract painting traditions in the work of an intergenerational group of artists working across mediums including Doug Ashford, Aidas Bareikis, Sarah Braman, Rosy Keyser, Rose Marcus, Rodney McMillian, Matt Saunders, Letha Wilson, and Brenna Youngblood. Past group exhibitions include Invisible Cities, an homage to Italo Calvino's beloved book featuring the work of Diana Al Hadid, Lee Bul, Carlos Garaicoa, Mary Lum, Emeka Ogboh, Sopheap Pich, and others, as well as The Workers, a look at the changing face of labor represented by a group of 25 international artists and filmmakers, including, among others, Camel Collective, Sam Durant, Harun Farocki, Oded Hirsch, Emily Jacir, Yoshua Okon, Alan Sekula, and Santiago Sierra.

Cross is currently working on an exhibition of nocturnes by William Binnie, TM Davy, Josephine Halvorsen, Shara Hughes, Sam McKinniss, Kenneth Rivero, Alexandria Smith, and others titled The Lure of the Dark: Contemporary Painters Conjure the Night as well as an ambitious project for MASS MoCA's largest gallery with Liz Glynn. She is also editing the first monograph on Glynn to be published in association with DelMonico Books·Prestel.  Cross is also the editor and author of the first monographs on the work of Da Corte and Finch, and coeditor of Sol LeWitt: 100 Views published by MASS MoCA and Yale University Press. Formerly, she was a curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. She received an MA from Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art. Cross lives with her husband and daughter in Williamstown, Mass.
