Mrzyk & Moriceau at Ratio 3

Written by Andrew Katz Katz

Article hero image
Mrzyk & Moriceau's new monochrome installation of recent work for Ratio 3 in San Francisco, The Man With The Golden Gun, showcases the duo's trademark humorous black-and-white drawings, which teeter between a kind of pop surrealism and a not-so-innocent Saturday morning cartoon. Many of the works depict scenes that would appear otherwise perfectly natural were it not for one or more elements that render the entire scene absurd. The framed drawings are arranged in messy, salon-style constellations that either compliment or disrupt the large-scale portraits painted directly onto the walls. A second gallery features two dozen black masks whose forms are taken straight from Mrzyk & Moriceau drawings. And a downtempo hymn from singer-songwriter Sébastien Tellier provides the soundtrack to the exhibition by way of Mrzyk & Moriceau’s adjacent animated music video.
