Weekly Recap (Week of April 30)
Written by Andrew Katz Katz
Whitney Kimball started the week with a review of Regina Rex's "Four Paintings," which is on view through June 3rd. The exhibition features four extremely talented painters, Jackie Gendel, Juan Gomez, Britta Deardorff, and Eric Sall (NAP #74). See the full post here!
--- As always, Matthew Smith is sending us great stuff for the blog. Last weekend he was at the Baltimore Contemporary Print Fair, which you can read about on the blog, and he also attended Tomokazu Matsuyama's exhibition, Thousand Regards, at American University. Matt writes, "Thousand Regards is a selection of Matsuyama’s recent paintings and sculpture produced between 2008 and 2011. His forms borrow from traditional Japanese figuration, in particular the adventure narratives of Edo period woodblock prints, as well as from traditional textile design. Compositionally, the works are related to Takashi Murakami’s superflat school -- sans the kawaii elements -- but they’re also layered with the visual language of American abstraction, drips and drabs lending to the chromatic narrative." Reason enough to check out his post, and more than enough reason to go see the exhibition at American University!
--- We are excited to have added a few new contributors to our roster. It allows us to cover more shows in new regions and introduce you to new emerging artists. Jenni Higginbotham, one of our latest additions, is from Santa Fe. In her first post, she reviewed Rebecca Shore's (NAP #41) exhibition, All In One, at Eight Modern. Thanks to Jenni for joining the team and sending along details on this great show!
--- Another great addition to the Blog writing staff is Robin Dluzen, from Chicago. Robin dove right in with a piece on Matthew Metzger’s “Backdrop” at Tony Wight Gallery. Ambitious work and equally ambitious to write about it, especially in short form. Check out Robin's first contribution! And, look forward to more in the future...
